Supernova: the Inter-University Trilingual NewsPresenting Competition

‘Supernova,’is the first and onlyinter-university trilingual competition which focuses on the presenting of news, that is organised by a university in Sri Lanka.

This competition has as its organiser, J'pura News by J'pura Voice, which is the news provider of J’pura Voice Club, of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

J’pura News by J’pura Voice was introduced with the intention of updating undergraduates of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura on important activities and events taking place within and outside the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, which are of importance to the undergraduates of the University.

J’pura News by J’pura Voice, currently distributes its news through a WhatsApp News service, which consist of 15 groups, through Facebook and twitter.

The key motive behind the organising of the Supernova competition is to create a trusted, reliable and standardised platform for Sri Lankan undergraduates to enhance and showcase their talents in the field of news-presenting, and to provide them with a unique and priceless opportunity of being evaluated on their newspresenting skills by the experts in the field of news-presenting in Sri Lanka.

This evaluation and the input that these talented undergraduates receive from these veteran news-presenters through the Supernova platform, will undoubtedly shape and hone the creative skills of the future news anchors who step into the news-presenting industry in Sri Lanka.

The first phase of Supernova’20/’21 which was held during the pandemic, saw the participation of over 300 state university undergraduates from all over Sri Lanka.

Despite the obstacles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,this first phase was successfully conducted with the participation of eminent news anchors in Sri Lanka, constituting the panel of judges, and the event was a huge success.

Supernova, whichis being organised for the 2nd time and has been given the title, Supernova Phase II, will be open to all university (state and private) undergraduates in Sri Lanka under three main language categories: English, Sinhala and Tamil.

A notewothy and important feature of the Supernova competition Phase II is that it has received recognition from the Ministry of Mass Media in Sri Lanka, the Media Centre for National Development of Sri Lanka and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Supernova is privileged and honoured to receive the support and guidance from these prestigious institutions to enhance the creativity and qualityof this competition.

Initial rounds of the competition will be held virtually and the contestants will be evaluated by aeminent panel of news anchors who are well-known in Sri Lanka, such as:
