AstraZeneca second dose to be given from today

Plans are ahead to immediately vaccinate the second dose of AstraZeneca starting from today (01) in centres run both by the Army and Medical Officers of Health in the Western Province.

In the Colombo District, the vaccine will be given at the Army Hospital in Narahenpita, the Army Hospital in Werahera and the Bodhirajaramaya Temple near Panagoda Army Camp from today. From tomorrow till Wednesday, the vaccine will be available at Diyatha Uyana, Battaramulla, said Colonel (Dr) Saveen Gamage, Director of Sri Lanka Army Preventive Medicine and Mental Health Services.

In the Gampaha district, the Army vaccination programme will take place in Dharmaloka MV in Kelaniya, Kirillawala MV in Kadawatha and Maristella College in Negombo.

He said that though there were no Army-run vaccination centres in the Kalutara district, vaccines would be administered through MoH offices. Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said the second dose of AstraZeneca will be administered via vaccination centres coming under MoH offices.

The vaccine will be given in 18 MOH offices, 13 hospitals and eight locations in the Colombo district and in five MOH offices in Kalutara. In the Gampaha district, 15 MOH offices will be giving the vaccine.

State Minister of Health Sudharshini Fernandopulle said that in the Gampaha district, the vaccine would be available in vaccination centres coming under MoHs.

A batch of 728,000 AstraZeneca doses donated by Japan to the COVAX facility arrived from Japan last evening.

According to the Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit, 925,242 persons have received the first dose of Co vi shield AstraZeneca vaccine and 385,885 have received the second dose by Friday.
