“SAYURU” WEATHER INFORMATION SCREEN: A BLESSING FOR NORTHERN FISHERMEN

Marking the World Fisheries Day which on November 21, a weather information screen was launched by Dialog in Myliddy harbour under the telecommunication company’s project “Sayuru”.

The facility which helps the fishermen enormously is presently run in Galle, Trincomalee and other places. Two screens were launched at Point Pedro and Myliddy in the Northern Province on November 20 and 21. The Myliddy screen was the eighth screen launched under this project. Fisheries Department Jaffna, Kumarasiri CEO Navy Myliddy, S.thiukumaran Harbour Manger and P. Subramaniam from the fishermen society and officers operating the Sayuru project including Nuwan Jayasinghe, Hadhil Nasley, Dasun T. Pathirana and H. D. P. Tissera participated at the event.

Sooriyarajah of DMC Jaffna said this is a great opportunity for the fishermen in the Myliddy area. “So far the fishermen in the peninsula used traditional methods to predict the weather and condition of the sea. A number of fishermen had died in the previous years due to thunder storm,” he said adding that even last year one fisherman from Chankanai who went to sea ignoring the DMC warning died.

He also said that the fisherman must protect their lives, because they are the breadwinners of their families. He further urged the fishermen to use life jackets, whenever they go to sea.

P. Subramaniam representing the Fishermen societies welcomed Dialog’s free screen service and also waterproof mobile phone covers which were given to the fishermen free of charge.
