Demonstration for Easter victims

DON PETER D E H I W E LA

The insanity of justice delayed is prolonging the trauma and agony of the Easter Sunday victims. It has been over two years now, and still the helpless victims are waiting with grief and anxiety about the outcome of the investigation into the Easter Sunday carnage. What is the fate of this much-hyped investigation, which is now drifting towards an entirely new complexion, staging ridiculous drama to hoodwink the masses? It is unfortunate that a segment of the clergy too, are hellbent on producing concocted theories to defend certain vested interests, and castigate the genuine representatives of the victims such as His eminence, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, whom they allege is making a mountain out of a molehill, and seeking the intervention of the international community to lobby their cause.

We saw the recent demonstration staged in the city of Bologna, Italy, by the Sri Lankan expatriates. Their only plea is for justice for the innocent victims of this heinous crime inflicted on people who had been in churches on Easter Sunday and the hotels in Colombo

We saw the recent demonstration staged in the city of Bologna, Italy, by the Sri Lankan expatriates. Their only plea is for justice for the innocent victims of this heinous crime inflicted on people who had been in churches on Easter Sunday and the hotels in Colombo. It is now a clarion call for the government to address this sensitive matter with utmost care and avoid the ever aggravating situation which is now turning out to be prime fodder for a few unscrupulous elements who want to thrive in these trying circumstances.

The inescapable and ruthless pandemic is gaining a stranglehold on our country, and we are now buffeted by an economic downturn. Can we bear the ignominy of being arraigned for alleged human rights violations in the present context when we have to build a strong and healthy rapport with the international community?. Let saner thinking prevail and inspire our leaders to act with a sense of justice and equity to resolve the issue of the Easter Sunder carnage. They need to probe who was behind this despicable act and at whose behest was this done. Until and unless justice is meted out to the victims of this tragic event, the wrath and curses of the maimed and bereaved will haunt those responsible for having committed this most heinous crime.
